UPS Package Handler, in Dora, Alabama
Physically demanding, mentally challenging, and fast paced atomosphere equals a great part time job.
Package Handler Job Description
This job is straight forward. You take packages off of a conveyor belt, read the shipping label, then place on of six different color coded conveyor belts behind you. The catch is you have to maintain 1200 packages an hour with near perfect accuracy on the belt placement. This means your reading one package while placing the one you read before on its belt without really looking at where it is going. This sounds intimidating but with a little practice most people who work hard do it with no problem. The only other requirement is to show up on time wearing work boots.
UPS Interview Questions
They hire most people they interview for this job. That is if you make it to all of your interview appointments. This process can take from 2 weeks to several months with a total time of about 4 hours. UPS does not pay you for this time. Your first appointment is just an information session. Watch a video, ask questions, and get the information about the job that I am writing here. You will be ahead of the game already after reading this.
They dismiss you by telling you they will call to set up an interview, usually within the next 2 weeks they will call. Second meeting is a 10 minute interview with a human resource employee. They are making sure you can breath, walk, and read (not positive about the reading because they don't actually ask). The next phone call will come between 2 and 4 weeks usually. Once you receive that call you are given a time for a tour of the UPS facility that takes an hour and a half.
If you get the next call - you are hired! This call will be for processing and paper work, usually less than one hour. Congratulations you have a job now. But not a start date. Depending on business and how much they liked you throughout this process will depend on when you start. If you make it to all of those meetings and still need a job or want it when they finally call you to work, then you have the job and the great benefits.
Salary and Benefits
Salary - UPS, Package Handler is $9/Hourly.
UPS is a tremendous company to work for. They have built the entire company based on the philosophy of taking care of their employees. They want to attract a lot of applicants and hire most of them. Many of them don't make it a month. If you do,and then stay 11 more months you will receive free healthcare for you and your family (employee is eligible at 1 year, family is added and 1.5 years). With student loans crippling students in our higher education system it is a relief to get any help you can with paying for school. UPS will reimburse you $3,000 per year and a total of $15,000 lifetime. They also give you $25 per class for books. All you have to do is pass the class and show up for your shift. Paid vacations start after your first year. One week after the second year you are working and it can increase from there. Other perks include staying in good shape and maintaining a hard work ethic (two of the most important aspects of a good life).
UPS Sort is in a building that is really, really hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It is fast pace with high pressure by your supervisors. They run a tight time line. People need there packages when they expect them. You get one 10 minute break on your shift and that is it.
This job is very physically demanding. The actual requirements are only that you can lift 75 pounds above your head. You are never sitting down and moving like you are running the whole shift. On most days you work about 4 hours. You are transferring packages from one belt to another. These packages can be light but mostly heavy. Think about the weight you are lifting. A couple of pounds on average per package multiplied by 1200 an hour. If the packages average 4 pounds that is 4800 pounds an hour. This job is physically demanding. Do not try it if you have back problems or any other serious medical condition.
