The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 9 percent decline in employment for the telecommunications industry from 2008 to 2018, compared to a 11 percent growth for all industries combined. Although there's an increasing demand for wireless Internet, mobile technologies and cable television, the productivity gains of the industry will cause a reduced demand for employees. Consolidation among companies will increase productivity among many occupational groups. Also, as telecommunications infrastructure becomes more reliable, fewer employees will be required to make repairs.
The BLS forecasts a decline in employment in the wired and wireless sectors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects job opportunities to be best for installation, maintenance and repair workers because many individuals in these positions are expected to retire in the coming years. The BLS also expects good job opportunities for customer service representatives due to a high turnover, which creates many job openings.
