Swift Transportation Truck Driver, in Edwardsville, Kansas
I drive a truck to transport products in the lower 48 states.
Truck Driver Job Description
As a driver for Swift Transportation you are to drive a truck and trailer to destinations across the country. Most of the loads are drop and hook and non touch, meaning you usually never touch the contents of the trailer you are hauling. You are expected to stay out for 2 to 3 weeks and are 1 day off for every 6 days you are out. A driver must plan the loads you get. When giving the information on a load you have to plan the route you will take and where you will plan your fuel stops and where you will stop to sleep. You have to do your drivers log. Basically you have to make a log of every thing you do during your day: drive time, when you stop for food, fuel or to rest and when your sleeping.
Swift Transportation Interview Questions
I first filled out an application and then was called for an interview with a driver supervisor. If you do well in the interview and your application is approved you are sent to do a driving test, then you are sent to do a dot physical and drug test. If all goes well, and you are an experienced driver, you are given a truck to start work, if you are new to truck driving you go out with a trainer in their truck for 4 to 6 weeks. When your trainer thinks you are ready then you are given a truck and sent out alone.
Salary and Benefits
Salary - Swift Transportation, Truck Driver is $22/Hourly.
Swift has a very good benefits package that includes a 401k plan, dental, vision and paid vacations.
The terminal at Edwardsville, Kansas is a great place to work. The supervisors and office people are all very nice and will help you whenever you have a problem. They have a great drivers lounge where you wait to get your loads, and the equipment they use is great. The trucks are almost like little apartments. I have a lcd tv/dvd, microwave and refrigerator in my truck.
The main thing this job requires is that you are able to drive for long periods of time. It also requires you to be able to unload your truck but that almost never happens. I have never had to unload a truck in the 11 years I have worked for Swift. You have to hook and unhook the trailers, but that is not too difficult. You have to continue to pass a dot physical and drug test on a regular basis.
