The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 12 percent employment growth in the educational services industry from 2008 to 2018, comparable to the 11 percent increase forecasted for all industries combined. Enrollment growth is expected to be larger at the elementary grades and middle school levels, which will likely create a slightly higher employment growth for teachers at these levels. A large number of job opening are excepted due to a greater than-average-number of workers who are more than 55 years of age in almost all the major occupations in the education services industry.

Enrollment is forecasted to grow at a faster rate in postsecondary institutions, thus the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the employment growth of postsecondary teachers to grow faster than the education services industry as a whole.
