Costco Wholesale Bakery Clerk, in Portland, Oregon
I prepare baked products for shelving.
Bakery Clerk Job Description
The bakery is the department through which it is easiest to become a Costco employee. It is demanding physically, carrying trays of baked goods to the conveyor belt to be wrapped and labeled before being placed on the displays for sale. The work is fast paced and fun, and the other workers generally create a sense of enthusiasm. If you want, you can watch the in-house ads and transfer into another department. From October onward through the holiday season, it is relatively easy to get on at the bakery. Even if you are considered "Seasonal" you will have your foot in the door and they will bring you back when they can. It is how many gain entry to Costco.
Costco Wholesale Interview Questions
The screening process is extensive. There is an initial interview by one of the screening people, followed then by an interview with the department manager, and then by another interview with one of the store managers. They do background checks, and the overall interview is one of the most thorough and rigorous I've ever encountered. If you are patient, courteous and display an eagerness for hard work though, they like that. "A sense of urgency" about tasks, and a willingness to get along well with other workers are their main checkpoints.
Salary and Benefits
Salary - Costco Wholesale, Bakery Clerk is $10/Hourly.
- Healthcare, even for part-time employees
Costco is fun, busy, organized and never boring. There is a sense of being in a bit of a hurry, but it is fun and almost exciting. A large warehouse store, there are many jobs to choose from once you are hired. Most people work in the bakery for a season, then when they are asked to return part-time, they can apply for a job they truly want to do. The bakery itself is hard physical labor, and you'll never crave pastries again in your life! But it's not bad, you do need to get your food preparation certificate from the county or city in which you live. The work is divided into three shifts. You can start as early as 4am for some jobs, or start at 3pm and get off at 11pm. The bakery is always operating. This makes it nice if you are a student, or if you are moonlighting, because they do try to fit your schedule with the department's needs.
There is heavy lifting in the bakery, and a great deal of fast-paced moderately physical work for Costco in general. So it is a place where you can get in fantastic shape (the average employee reports a 15 pound weight loss the first 6 months there.) But it was never horrible, and it is kind of nice to feel you're getting in shape and getting stronger each day.
Other Costco Wholesale Job Information
Costco expects hard work, fast response, and unwavering acceptance of their rules. It is a disciplined environment. But they pay fairly, give good benefits to part time people, and they have almost monthly events where they spread out food or have a barbeque and all employees are invited to have a free meal that day. I found them very fair, very fun, and it was a good learning experience.
