A Typical Day as a Waiter

Hello, I work in the food service industry and I'm a waiter. Here is a short run down of my typical day, however I must say that no day is typical.

As I get prepared for work I am usually a bit apprehensive about what the day will hold, as there are not too many constants in my line of work. However, as I arrive at work and get started, my apprehensiveness wears off as I start to get settled in to my routine.

Upon arriving at work, I clock in and find out the section of the restaurant I am assigned. Then the fun begins, as I start the work that puts food on my table, which is putting food on other’s tables. For the next 11 hours I will be waiting on people, hoping to get a tip in return.

My work includes taking food orders, bringing out drinks and food items as well as cleaning up after people. It is important that I make this note on how I get paid. Tips are my primary source of income, the company I work for pays me 2.60 an hour which covers my health insurance and income taxes, It is so important that people leave a tip as this is the case with most waiters and waitresses.

There are other things I have to do besides waiting on tables; which include making tea and coffee, restocking bread and other items as well as to-go orders. As my shift comes to an end, and the restaurant closes for the day, there are additional tasks. I must clean, restock and make sure things are ready for the next shift.

While my job is not a terribly hard, it does have its moments as you deal with unhappy guests, food issues, co-workers, including management, and a whole lot of other variables that are too numerous to mention. Also waiting tables is a physical job that takes it toll on your body.

Over all I like my job, but if I could choose another career, I guess I would like to be a full time pastor or youth pastor, since that is what I do part time, Sometimes I let my job as a waiter get me down a bit as I tend to dwell on it even when I am not at work, but I guess when all is said and done, "a typical day as a waiter" isn't too bad.
