A Typical Day as a Volunteer Theatre Teacher
As a volunteer instructor for an after-school theatre program aimed at junior high students, my "work" day does not begin until about 3 PM. This means, I am fully awake and aware before I have to deal with 35-40 pre-teens; which is a good thing.
However, while they can be extremely obnoxious, I find myself looking forward to going to "work," because I work with very talented kids, and they can be a little bit goofy. A typical day consists of vocal warm-ups focusing on enunciation, vocal projection, energy building, and then focusing that energy.
This is followed by an hour to an hour and a half of rehearsal for the current play. We put on two productions a year, one full length play and a One Act Festival that showcases short student written, directed, and acted projects. This is a very rewarding experience for me. When I gave the kids their copies of Romeo & Juliet this year I had forty kids wondering if they were going to be able to perform Shakespeare. By the end, I had them quoting themselves in the hall. And I think that's the most rewarding part of this "job," teaching something to a group of great kids that they will never forget.
