A Typical Day as a Medical Biller

I typically do not mind going to work, namely because there is so much variety to my day. Once I get to work, usually between 7 am and 8 am, I boot up my computer to begin my tasks. I will then get the physician charge sheets from the prior day and enter the charges for the services provided.

With ten clinicians in the office inputting charges can take as much as 3-4 hours, depending on interruptions. Once I have completed the charge entry I will mail the previous day’s claims out to the insurance companies. Insurance represents the majority of income to the office, since most of the clients have some type of medical insurance.

Once I finish inputting charges and mailing insurance claims, I will concentrate on the posting of payments and insurance denials. This will sometimes involve calls or letters to the insurance company concerning inappropriate denials or low payments. I also am required to work on the unpaid balances that are being billed to either the insurance companies or to the patient. While doing this I also have to take time out to speak to patients who doesn't understand the bill that they have recieved, taking phone calls from insurances and answering questions for the office assistants.

Generally mental health claims are not handled by most insurance companies in the same way as a medical claims; therefore there is always a problem that needs to be resolved.
