A Typical Day as a Law School Librarian
I jump out of bed every day, eager to go to work. I am a law librarian, and I love my job. It was not where my life was originally headed, but this is where the path has led. This is the career I chose, due to my love of books and my desire to help others.
Most of the time, I process books and order new materials for the library. Without me, there would literally be no books on the shelves. Another way I get books for people is through Interlibrary Loan, which gives our students and patrons access to books all over the world. It also means we don’t have to buy every book in the world in order to assist our patrons in the best way.
Besides working in the background to keep the library stocked and running, I get to help in other ways. Sometimes a professor needs some research done for an article he is working on. Sometimes I’m really lucky and I get to work the circulation desk, helping our patrons locate needed legal materials and other resources.
Although I don’t have a law degree like the other librarians, I am still usually able to guide patrons to the right information. It is very satisfying to be able to get patrons the right material for their case or project. I do take my work home with me occasionally, but it is my preference to do so.
There are many times I go online to check for important emails or to search for new material to add to our collection. I think of it more as entertainment than work. There are not a lot of surprises in my daily work, but I still find it highly rewarding. I can’t think of any job I’d like better.
