Inside the Work Day

A Typical Day as a Dispensing Optician

As a dispensing optician, my day is always different, since I deal with different people every day. I look forward to helping people choose their frames and fit their glasses, because most people are grateful for the assistance and thrilled with their improved vision.

I also have to fix the frames of our patients, and they have brought in frames they have sat on, run over, stepped on and one even wanted to know if I could fix his glasses he dropped in the running disposal!

Sometimes, because our patients include a large amount of elderly people that can often be very challenging! I had an elderly patient come in recently insisting that she ordered new glasses with a new prescription and was very upset that we did not have them ready. We had no record of an order, and, checking with the doctor, she hadn't been to his office in over two years, but we could not convince her of that, and she finally left the office in a huff.

We also have to deal with young children, who really don't want to wear glasses and convince them they'll still look great. I've always enjoyed when someone who has never worn glasses has come in, because they are always amazed at just how good they can look with the right frames. I always try to teach them which shape frames look the best with the shape of their face, and what color frames best compliment their skin tone.

I've been doing it for almost thirty years, and have gotten to know most of my patients well and that makes my job a real pleasure. On the more stressful days, I sometimes take it home with me, but, because every day is different, I never dwell on it. Because of the varied experiences I encounter, the low stress level, and the great hours, I have never given any serious thought to changing my career.
