I’m The Boss
Creating Value in Minimum Wage Jobs
Why is there no loyalty and so many turnovers in minimum wage jobs? It’s not the wages, but more the value according to some companies in the daily actions, strategies and beliefs of employees, making it a radical concept. This goes against the old beliefs about business. Well known companies are operating this way and proving that this “new thinking” has great values.
A book called, “Managing by Values”, by Ken Blanchard and Michael O’Connor shows an exceptional management style. An excellent statement from the book is, “Success in business is all about service. Service is where we gain our edge, and service means people – it’s about our relationships.”
Decisions come from the top in most companies and employees are not encouraged to add any input. No input, no advancement. Bosses are managers who rule through intimidation. It’s all about control. Thus, the turnover is continual. Hire again for the jobs at minimum wage and again comes turnover. It’s just a circle and companies are trying to figure out why this circle is happening.
With values in management, employees are included in the running of the company. Consensus is how decisions are made. Creativity is encouraged among the team of employees to bring out the best. Coaches for the teams are the managers. Discussion and agreement generate values, establishing ownership companywide of these agreements.
Companies can’t succeed if people aren’t functioning properly. Content employee’s, working at minimum wage; result in a much less turnover. Sales go up and so do the profits. Projects get done on time, even earlier. Wages go up from minimum in pay for the job and advancement is also possible.
The most important thing to remember, when dealing with the public, is that they are the most important part of your business. Without them, you’d have no money to have a business.
