Due to organizational restructuring and office automation secretaries and administrative assistants are increasingly taking responsibilities once taken by managers and professional staff members. However, their core responsibilities are performing and coordinating administrative tasks and storing, retrieving and integrating information for dissemination to staff members and clients. They perform research, manage projects, negotiate with vendors and purchase supplies. Specific job duties vary with titles and experience.

Administrative and Support Services Employment Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts office administrative services to be one of the fastest growing industries. The BLS forecasts secretaries and administrative assistants will have among the largest number of job openings due to growth as well as the need to replace employees who enter other occupations or leave the workforce. The BLS expects the best opportunities are for those with extensive knowledge of computer software applications.
Above average job growth in the health care and social assistance industry is expected to lead to much faster than average growth for medical secretaries. According to the BLS, industries such as educational services, construction, health care and social assistance, and professional, scientific and technical services are expected to create the most new jobs. The BLS forecasts a 12 percent employment growth for administrative services managers from 2008 to 2018, about as fast as the average for all occupations.
